Spieker Scores First Win at Thunder Hill
It was a night of firsts at the Thunder Hill Speedway on Saturday August 6 as a first time winner visited Victory Lane in the first appearance there by the MidwestDirt Late Model Series.
Matt Johnson started on the pole position with current points leader Delbert Smith alongside for the 25 lap Main Event. Johnson, the winner of his heat race and the G&G Dozer Dash, quickly jumped to the topside of the track with Smith down to the bottom as the two raced side by side the first 9 laps until, as they started working lapped traffic, both got together in turn 4, with Smith coming to a stop in turn 2 causing a caution.
On the restart Johnson realized that his car was also mangled from the contact and stopped at the top of turn 3. Both cars retired from the race, giving Chris Spieker the race lead.
Doug Sieh would bring out another caution a lap later with a spin in turn 4 and Dave Conkwright did the same 3 laps later. Bo Egge mounted a charge on the restart but couldn’t keep up with Spieker, who drove his #56 to the winner’s circle. Egge finished second, Jimmy Segraves third, and Ed Moore fourth.
Johnson and Spieker won the heat races earlier in the evening.
The next event for the MDLMS Late Models will be on Friday August 19 at the Salina Speedway in Salina, Kansas.
